4:00- The spot I picked for my two hour observation was on top of the hill in my area. It is covered in pine tree saplings and about 3 large pine trees. Around the hill, the leaves are just starting to turn, and a few have already fallen. The weather is crisp but there is no wind or clouds so it is not to bad. I don't see or hear and animals but there is a fungi I can see from here on a large tree, some sort of bracket fungi. Also I have noticed that on the higher ground, were there is pine trees, there is more ground brush. Where as the more forested area, where the trees are taller, there is less ground brush.
4:20- After about 20 minutes of sitting here I have seen much wildlife come back. I have seen lots of little finch like birds flying from tree to tree. I heard a woodpecker but could not see it. I also saw a blue bird eating something on the ground. There are tons of squirrels all over. They are the noisiest things in the forest and I can here them and see them tromping around all over. The weather is still the same.
4:40- I can tell that the animals are getting a lot more comfortable and have forgotten from when I entered the forest. They are getting closer, especially the squirrels. A few of them came up to a tree about 10 feet away from me and climbed it. I also heard the wood pecker flying from tree to tree, and it even stopped at a tree close to me and I got a glimce of it. I turned around and peeled a bit of the bark of the tree I was leaning on. It was the only deciduous tree on the hill. there was nothing underneath the bark, but I did see a small beetle crawl around the tree.
5:00- I saw a butterfly flying around me so I got up and chased it a bit to get a picture. When I sat back down I could not hear and animals again. This show how alert and careful they are. I have not seen any other types of mammals or insects for the past 20 minutes. The sun is getting lower and it is starting to get a tiny bit darker.
5:30- I was about to get up to look around a bit, but I heard something big in a nearby tree. I kept very still and a bunch of turkeys flew down from the trees. I had no clue that turkeys could fly up that high to the very tops of trees. But when I looked up there, they were all just perched on the branch. When the flew down the instantly started walking away from me so they probably knew I was there. There was 7 turkeys, all female and all the same age. They looked to be almost adults but still a little young.
5:50- The turkeys only stayed in my range of vision for about 10 minutes. After they left I got up to look around a little more. I walked to the bottom of the hill. I found a leg bone, and also a jaw bone. Possibly from a deer. (I did research it later, and it was deer bones). I found another mushroom which was orange and fuzzy.
6:00- The sun is a lot lower now and it is getting darker. There isn't as many birds that I can see or hear, but still just as many squirrels. I saw a chipmunk run by that was very close to me. I also saw a very small toad that I heard hopping through the leaves.
